Although each of us already inhabits a wonderfully constructed instrument, it’s invisible; we’ll never see or be able to put our hands on it! But that’s what acquiring vocal technique is all about – our voices become accessible. The three components of singing are posture, breath and resonance. Aligning these modalities and learning to “operate” them is like learning to drive a car... you have to explore and discover how sound in the body feels, then acquire a lot of coordinated skills.
The teaching methods I employ are called “bel canto,” the traditional Italian school of vocal technique. Bel canto training is straight forward and can be used to sing everything from rock and roll to opera. Even Mick Jagger has trained in bel canto!
The main ingredients of vocal technique are a love of singing, a desire to improve and the willingness to undergo training. I’m with the old joke: Question: “How do you get to Carnegie Hall?” Answer: “Practice, practice, practice!”
